Native American Site: Rebuilding of the Longhouse with Jeff Gottlieb

June 1, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

free

Irvine’s property is home to a recreated Native American educational site, which serves as a place to teach, share and honor Maryland’s First People. It was built in partnership in 2016 with the Baltimore American Indian Center, Stevenson University, Interpretive Naturalist Jeff Gottlieb, and many volunteers. The Native American educational site is the location of 50+ school field trips annually.

Jeff Gottlieb, who led Irvine Nature Center in the building of the wigwams and longhouse at the site, has constructed more than 60 full scale wigwam and longhouse replicas at various locations along the East Coast. Jeff will return to Irvine next month to dismantle the current longhouse and fully rebuilding a new one. Jeff is a wealth of information and one of the most interesting characters you’ll ever meet! If you’re looking to give back to an important project in the community, learn new skills, or have outdoor time, please consider joining the Irvine team

We are looking for adult and teen (age 16+) volunteers to help with improvements and repairs of our Native American site. This volunteer opportunity will help us maintain our educational site AND give you access to firsthand expertise from an Earth & Primitive Skills educator. View available dates and signup to volunteer HERE

We recognize the many contributions of Native Americans and the impact that colonization has had on this vibrant community. For more on this – https://www.explorenature.org/about/mission/
