June’s volunteers of the month are the dynamic duo of Sue and Tim Davis!
Every Friday from April through August, Sue and Tim, along with longtime volunteer Brigitte Harper and newcomer Jeff Pargament, spend the morning on the bluebird trail, monitoring Irvine’s 50 songbird nest boxes. At each box, they note what species is using the box (determined by nest structure, egg characteristics, or sighting of an adult), and track the growth of young birds from egg to fledgling. Tim enters this data into the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Nestwatch.
Before nesting season began, the pair worked diligently to clear out nest boxes to prepare them for spring, replaced and repaired any damaged boxes, and installed new predator guards (“baffles”).
Sue and Tim can also be found assisting with administrative work, mailings, and special events, like the Treehugger 5K.
Congratulations Tim and Sue, and thanks for all that you do!
