A Camp Out for the Books!

June 29, 2015 - Latest, Urban Education

John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle School has overcome many obstacles in their journey towards Green School Certification.

Through burnt down play grounds to stolen green features, this school has not had an easy ride. Nicole Hare, Green Team Leader, pulled it all together! Through the help of her fellow faculty members, students, and Green Team they succeeded in becoming a Green School. It has been Irvine’s pleasure working with this school! To celebrate the new Green School certification the Green Team traveled to Sandy Point Beach State Park for the MAEOE Youth Summit where they received their award & Green School flag.

The celebration did not stop there though, it continued as 17 Green Team students traveled to Irvine Nature Center to camp out for the first time. These students were so excited, and up for anything. We went on a hike at night (without flashlights!), cooked our own food over the fire, roasted s’mores, told legends, and slept in tents all night! It was the experience of a lifetime for these students, and even the three faculty members that came along.
