Moe Brown has been a valued Volunteer Naturalist at Irvine for the past 5 years.When he was facing retirement in 2010, Moe looked into many different volunteer opportunities in Baltimore County. When asked why he chose to volunteer with Irvine, he gave the following response:
“While the campus [was] located over nine miles away, the drive onto the grounds, the new environmental “green” structure and friendly greeting upon arrival was immediately enticing. It was obvious that leadership, careful planning and vision was present.
I was hooked! The education program to become a volunteer Naturalist Guide exposing young school aged children to various aspects of nature seemed to call out. Most importantly, an excellent training orientation equipped me with the details required to begin.
Almost five years have passed since going through an initial training orientation with eleven other “students”. I am still there- leading such educational programs as Sensing Nature, Native Americans, Seasonal Changes, or Decomposition Detectives.
The dedication of the staff and volunteers is inspirational, and I count myself as being fortunate to have found and embraced the hours spent at The Nature Center. While only one of over 800 volunteers helping in various aspects of this unique “rural” oasis, I hope that my contribution has had some positive impact in exposing many young people to the beauty and continued wonderment of [our] natural surroundings.”
