It was cold this week but it didn’t stop the Nature Preschool from getting out on the trails! The children prepared by dressing in full cold weather clothing! So many skills are reinforced while gearing up, like fine and large motor development, patience, determination, confidence and more! They even work on social skills and cooperation by giving and receiving help from others! We found tons of animal tracks in the snow and other clues like scat and even fur! Everyone was excited to hike to the stream and see if it was frozen or flowing. We found out it was a little bit of both! The children found some super cool ice formations and worked hard to excavate them! We brought out paints, brushes and pipettes and added some color to the snowy scenery all around us!
Inside we recreated snowy scenes and winter skies using natural paint brushes! We used branches and bubble wrap to paint with various wintery colors. Our snowflakes, made with liquid water colors and pipettes, turned out to be gorgeous artwork which we have displayed in all our classrooms! Lots of writing was happening this week. The children enjoyed mixing their own “puffy paint” to add snow to their “Ss” page in their nature alphabet books! We enjoyed reading books like “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats and the children practiced their scissor skills to cut out “Peter” and make their own scene from the story!
Next week we are excited to introduce the story “The Mitten” by Jan Brett and will be ready for more winter fun!
